This small booklet in Bengali on biodiversity gives a general account of biodiversity along with information on different facets of biodiversity, viz., status at national as well as state level, uses, threats, steps towards conservation of the same, legal aspects, sustainability, associated traditional and indigenous knowledge and most importantly role of people’s participation in conservation efforts. Written lucidly, the book appeals to one and all for its simple and clear message.

This pocket field guide in Bengali on the common freshwater fishes of South Bengal is one of the first in line of a series of identification manuals being prepared by the Board for assisting the People’s Biodiversity Register – PBR exercise in the state. The book with its wonderful descriptions, line drawings, sketches and colour photographs of the mouth watering fish species, appeals to every fish loving Bengali’s appetite and curiosity regarding the same. The book also gives information regarding the scientific names, families and English common names of each species described.

This pocket field guide in Bengali on the common aquatic plants of West Bengal is one of the first in line of a series of identification manuals being prepared by the Board for assisting the People’s Biodiversity Register – PBR exercise in the state. Other than providing a simple to follow guide for identifying 57 common aquatic plants the book has interesting anecdotes regarding traditional uses of the same along with pencil sketches and colour photographs. The book also provides guidelines on how to keep information of plants which are not easily identifiable.

This pocket field guide in Bengali on the common edible fungi (mushrooms) of West Bengal comes in line of a series of identification manuals being prepared by the Board for assisting the PBR exercise in the state. This book provides a guide to 42 common edible mushrooms with notes on their vernacular and scientific names, habitat, field identifiable characters, uses and folk knowledge associated with them. The line drawing of each species and some colour photographs also help in quick identification. The list of reference books and websites of related topics is also very helpful for further study. The book also provides guidelines on how to collect information on new and unidentified wild mushrooms.

Biodiversity - Issues & Concerns is the Proceeding of the workshop "Biodiversity of West Bengal-Documentation and Conservation" organised by the Board on the occasion of the International Biological Diversity Day, 2006 - in which experts had spoken on various related issues. It starts with a lecture transcript of the keynote address by Dr. Renu Swarup on characterization, conservation and sustainable utilization of biodiversity. The articles to follow include Faunal Resources of West Bengal by Dr. A. K. Ghosh, on Eastern Himalayan Belt by Prof. B. Dasgupta, on the wetland flora and fauna by Prof. P. K. Mukherjee and Dr. A. Chattopadhyay and agricultural diversity by Sri. A. Chattejee. The treatise ends with an article by Dr. S. Bhattacharya giving a background of the People's Biodiversity Register in West Bengal.

PEOPLE'S BIODIVERSITY REGISTER (PBR)

The first People's Biodiversity Register (PBR) to be officially documented by the West Bengal Biodiversity Board. The PBR is of Gurulia-Bhatshala Mouza under the Paschimpara Gram Panchayat (Goghat - II Panchayat Samiti, District - Hooghly) and documents the bioresources and the associated traditional and indigenous knowledge of the said area.
The People's Biodiversity Register (PBR) of Paschimpara Mouza is the documentation of the bioresources and the associated traditional and indigenous knowledge of another Mouza under the Paschimpara Gram Panchayat (Goghat - II Panchayat Samiti, District - Hooghly).
The People's Biodiversity Register (PBR) of Patharpratima Gram Panchayat under the Patharpratima Panchayat Samiti, District - 24 Parganas (South) is an endeavour of the West Bengal Biodiversity Board to document the bioresources and the associated traditional and indigenous knowledge of the entire Patharpratima Gram Panchayat consisting of seven villages - Dakshin Shibganj, Madhabnagar, Kishorinagar, Dakshin Lakshmi Narayanpu, Bhagabatpur, Barodapur and Paschim Dwarakapur.

 

The People's Biodiversity Register(PBR) of Jankapur 2No.Gram Panchayat under the Dantan 2 No. Panchayat Samiti of Paschim Medinipur district is the documentation of the bioresources and the associated traditonal knowledge of the said area by the supervision of West bengal Biodiversity Board.

 

 

The People's Biodiversity Register(PBR) of Mankanali Gram Panchayat under the Bankura 2 No. Panchayat Samiti of Bankura district is an another effort of the West Bengal Biodiversity Board to document the bioresources and the associated traditonal knowledge of the said area.

 

 

The People's Biodiversity Register (PBR) of Shantipur Mouza is the documentation of the bioresources and the associated traditional and indigenous knowledge of the third Mouza under the Paschimpara Gram Panchayat (Goghat - II Panchayat Samiti, District - Hooghly).
