Activities

 

The Board functions towards ensuring proper implementation of the Biological Diversity Act, 2002 and the West Bengal Biological Diversity Rules, 2005. The important functions undertaken by the Board include-

  • To make people Aware of the biodiversity and its importance in human well being.
  • Constitution of Biodiversity Management Committees(BMC) in the Panchayat samitiy and Municipality level .
  • Documenting biodiversity, their uses and traditional knowledge and practices associated with those in the form of People’s Biodiversity Register (PBR) involving local people through the concern BMCs
  • Initiating Conservation activities and Bio-resource Management  depending upon the PBR of the particular area
  • Identification of Heritage Sites and Sacred Groves of the state and prepare the management plan of those area in consultation with the concern BMCs.
  • Maintaining Digitized Data related to floral and faunal resources  of the state.
  • Conducting Studies on biodiversity related issues of the state.
  • Regulating commercial activities related to bio-resources of the state.
  • Regulating other activities which affect the biodiversity of the state.   
  • Conducting biodiversity related workshops for different target groups viz., school, college and university students, teachers, researchers, scientists, policy makers, BMC members, industries, farmers, breeders, holders and creators of indigenous and traditional knowledge.
  • Regulatory activities according to The Biological Diversity Act, 2002 and West Bengal Biological Diversity Rules, 2005: granting of permission to access biodiversity of the State by Indian nationals through the prescribed form of the Rule and also denying permission if contrary to the legislation and other such regulations.
  • Regulatory activities according to The Biological Diversity Act, 2002 and West Bengal Biological Diversity Rules, 2005: granting of permission to access biodiversity of the State by Indian nationals through the prescribed form of the Rule and also denying permission if contrary to the legislation and other such regulations.undertaking physical inspection of any area in connection with implementation of the Act.

  • Initiating and guiding Post PBR activities: conservation initiatives, entrepreneurship development on sustainable biological resources, biological resource management and other such activities.
  • Conducting workshops for preparing PBRs under these BMCs. Generating published materials and providing expertise to assist PBR activities.
  • Biodiversity documentation: in the form of comprehensive digitized data of available resources of the State along with a digital library and also an annotated bibliography of available literature on biodiversity of the State.
  • Publications on Biodiversity of the State: the Board has published a number of books, booklets, pamphlets, brochures and posters for communicating various biodiversity information and messages for the common people, school, college and university students and the scientific community.

The mandate of WBBB demands for some of the above mentioned technical programmes, viz., BMC constitution, PBR activities, awareness programmes, conservation activities, etc. to be implemented throughout the State of West Bengal covering all the districts.
