Activities

 

The WBBB functions towards ensuring proper implementation of the Biological Diversity Act, 2002 and the West Bengal Biological Diversity Rules, 2005. The important functions undertaken by the WBBB include-

  • generating awareness regarding the wealth of biodiversity in our State, importance of   documenting and conserving it and also on adopting means for sustainable development of our bio resources and on the provisions of the related Acts and Rules.
  • constitution of Biodiversity Management Committees (BMC): The WBBB has till date constituted 13 BMCs in the State.
  • initiating and monitoring People’s Biodiversity Register (PBR) preparation activities through the constituted BMCs as well as, through projects granted to different interested organizations and institutions, the WBBB has initiated PBR activities at Gram Panchayats and Wards of the P.S. and Municipalities where BMCs have already been constituted in the State.
  • initiating and guiding Post PBR activities: conservation initiatives, entrepreneurship development on sustainable biological resources, biological resource management and other such activities.
  • conducting workshops for preparing PBRs under these BMCs. Generating published materials and providing expertise to assist PBR activities.
  • identification and declaration of Heritage Sites and Sacred Groves.
  • biodiversity documentation: in the form of comprehensive digitized data of available resources of the State along with a digital library and also an annotated bibliography of available literature on biodiversity of the State.
  • publications on Biodiversity of the State: the WBBB has published a number of books, booklets, pamphlets, brochures and posters for communicating various biodiversity information and messages for the common people, school, college and university students and the scientific community.
  • conducting biodiversity related workshops for different target groups viz., school, college and university students, teachers, researchers, scientists, policy makers, BMC members, industries, farmers, breeders, holders and creators of indigenous and traditional knowledge.
  • regulatory activities according to The Biological Diversity Act, 2002 and West Bengal Biodiversity Rules, 2005: granting of permission to access biodiversity of the State by Indian nationals through the prescribed form of the Rule and also denying permission if contrary to the legislation and other such regulations.
  • commissioning studies and sponsoring investigations and research conceming conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity, bio-survey, bio-utilisation and other relevant subjects.
  • undertaking physical inspection of any area in connection with implementation of the Act.
  • conducting biodiversity related workshops for different target groups viz., school, college and university students, teachers, researchers, scientists, policy makers, BMC members, industries, farmers, breeders, holders and creators of indigenous and traditional knowledge.

The mandate of WBBB demands for some of the above mentioned technical programmes, viz., BMC constitution, PBR activities, awareness programmes, conservation activities, etc. to be implemented throughout the State of West Bengal covering all the districts.
